In the year 2016, women are taking the makeup industry to the next level. Women love to dress up and prepare themselves for the day in the best ways possible at all times. WIth improvements in technology and the increase of makeup in social media, the industry is truly growing exponentially. The ability for girls to go online and simply look up makeup tutorials or different things that celebrities have done is easier today than it has ever been before. YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter are major sites where these sort of things occur. There are pages and channels for makeup on all three of these sights that have millions of followers and they are only getting larger.
The ‘reality TV’ generation that we live in has lead to this increase in makeup as well. While makeup has always been around, this current generation is seeing its use earlier and earlier. About twenty years ago it was almost a cardinal sin for middle-school aged girls to wear makeup. Now this sort of thing is almost the norm for our society, which is scary in some ways. People like the Kardashians, shows like Jersey Shore, and events like the Victoria’s Secret fashion show have all created this society. Women have set this unrealistic standard for themselves and the easiest way for them to achieve it is through makeup.
We also live in a generation that is in love with altering body construction through things like plastic surgery as well. This sort of popularity is similar and can be connected to the popularity seen with makeup. Women want artificial ways to look better, and it is completely acceptable for this ‘increased beauty’ to come from makeup. The ‘natural’ look is something that is slowing becoming very rare for women. Our society has allowed this and there does not seem to be any change in the near future.
There was one point where mothers would shun daughters for wearing large amounts of makeup, and there were much more negative views towards makeup on young girls. Now this is being allowed much more often and these girls are fully vulnerable to the real world we live in at a very young age. Even TV shows that are meant for children have actresses who are wearing makeup. Eyeliner, blush, fake eye-lashes; all of these things are being used. Girls are seeing this and setting it as the standard for what ‘pretty’ is supposed to look like. It is the same sort of mental manipulation used with things like Barbie dolls. Setting standards that are quite frankly ridiculous. However the obsession with makeup come from the fact that with enough of it, these girls can look like who they see on tv. That is why it can make so much money and why it has grown so much.
Women will go to huge lengths for their beauty and spend sometimes unreasonable amounts on their beauty. Makeup is one of the things at the top of this list. It is becoming a necessity for almost all women, which is sad, but it is just the world that we all live in today. It is inevitable that women will come faced with the choice to conform to this in society or move away from it. This decision is becoming a very hard one for women to choose the latter option. With social media and other large internet sites, it has become a standard to wear makeup. It is almost a crime for women to even think about not wearing makeup to a formal event. This sort of obsession is one of the flaws that comes with such a technology based society.
